What is Sleep Study?

To book a slot for sleep study, polysomnography (PSG) test, you may dial 6309657730.

A sleep study (polysomnography – PSG) is a diagnostic test which involves sensors to transmit data electronically and record specific physical activities of multiple body systems while you sleep.

  • EEG (electroencephalogram) to measure and record brain wave activity.
  • EMG (electromyogram) to record muscle activity such as face twitches, teeth grinding, and leg movements, and to determine the presence of REM stage sleep. During REM sleep, intense dreams often occur as the brain undergoes heightened activity.
  • EOG (electro-oculogram) to record eye movements. These movements are important in determining the different sleep stages, particularly REM stage sleep.
  • ECG (electrocardiogram) to record heart rate and rhythm.
  • Nasal airflow sensor to record airflow.
  • Snore microphone to record snoring activity.
  • Abdomen
  • Thorax

The recordings are analyzed by a qualified sleep specialist to determine whether or not you have sleep apnea or another type of sleep disorder.

What is Sleep Apnea?

It is a potential serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night’s sleep, you might have sleep apnea. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, this means the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen.

Symptoms:

  • Waking up with a very sore or dry throat
  • Loud or frequent snoring
  • Occasionally waking up with a choking or gasping sensation
  • Sleepiness or lack of energy during the day
  • Sleepiness while driving
  • Morning headaches
  • Restless sleep
  • Forgetfulness, mood changes, and a decreased interest in sex
  • Recurrent awakenings or insomnia
  • Silent pauses in breathing
  • Nocturia (waking during the night to go to the bathroom)

Consequences / Effects:

If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in a growing number of health problems, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart failure, irregular heart beats, and heart attacks
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Worsening of ADHD
  • Headaches
  • And other ailments
  • In addition, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for poor performance in everyday activities, such as at work and school, motor vehicle crashes, and academic underachievement in children and adolescents.
